Climate – The climate is tropical and warm, due to the moderating effects of ocean winds. Mean temperatures range from 17 °C (62.6 °F) in the central highlands, where frost may occur for several days in the winter, to a maximum of 33 °C (91.4 °F) in other low-altitude areas. Average yearly temperatures range from 28 °C (82.4 °F) to nearly 31 °C (87.8 °F). Day and night temperatures may vary by 14 °C (25.2 °F) to 18 °C (32.4 °F).[150]

Language – Sinhalese and Tamil are the two official languages of Sri Lanka.[266] The Constitution defines English as the link language. English is widely used for education, most people can communicate in English.

Food – Sri Lankan cuisine has influences from colonial powers, foreign traders and the Southern India. Key ingredients are rice, coconut and especially spices, reflecting the island's history as a spice producer and trading post over several centuries. Sri Lankan cuisine centers around boiled or steamed rice served with a curry of fish, chicken, beef, mutton or goat, along with other curries made with vegetables, lentils or fruit. Dishes are accompanied by pickled fruit or vegetables, chutneys and sambals, especially coconut sambol, a paste of ground coconut mixed with chili peppers, dried Maldive fish and lime juice.

Clothing – In Sri Lanka’s heat the most practical and comfortable clothing is loose fitting, light cotton wear. This is applicable for most parts of the country as the weather is hot and humid. However the Hill Country is similar to an English spring with the temperature becoming colder in the night. In the mountains a good wool sweater is advisable for the nights while in the day time a jumper or light cardigan should suffice to keep the cold away. In general travelers should stick to casual wear which gives you more freedom while you explore the Country Sandals or flip flops are much more comfortable than shoes and when visiting temples or shrines they are easier to remove. However if planning on engaging in hikes up mountains or through jungle trails a good pair of socks and trainers would be the better option. Sunglasses, hats or caps are also a necessity to protect you from the bright rays of the sun.

Travelers need to be properly attired when visiting sacred sites and shrines as revealing items of clothing are frowned upon and entry into such sites may be denied. Women travelers will need to cover their shoulder and legs so it is good to have a light scarf and sarong at hand to wear when necessary. Men should also note that long shorts or trousers paired with t-shirts or shirts would be the preferred option at religious sites.

Suggested packing – Mosquito repellent, torch, umbrella,
Sun screen & hat/cap

Excursion No. 03 – Day Galle City Tour

Galle

Galle (pronounced gawl in English and gaar-le in Sinhala) is a living time capsule. It has a vibrant commercial district that’s also shambolic and often charmless, but passes through one of the Fort gates and you are transported back to the Dutch colonial era. Built by the Dutch beginning in 1663, the 36-hectare Fort occupies most of the promontory that forms the older part of Galle. Described by the notoriously hard-to-please Paul Theroux as being ‘garlanded with red hibiscus and smelling of the palm-scented ocean,’ the Fort is an amazing collection of structures and culture dating back through the centuries. Just wandering the streets at random yields one architectural surprise after another. And be sure to take in the dramatic views of town and ocean from the encircling walls. UNESCO has recognized Fort as a World Heritage Site
